April Fools'! It's A Boy

Couple Thought They Were Having Daughter, Actually Had Son

POSTED: 10:43 am PDT April 4, 2008

A Deerfield, N.H., couple had an April Fools' surprise this week when they welcomed a baby boy into the world -- after they believed they were having a girl.

Kevin Patrick Bresnahan is just a few days old. But his parents had a different name in mind before he was born.

"I still have a hard time calling him Kevin because it was going to be Kelsie," said his mother, Kelly Bresnahan.

When she was five months along, Kelly Bresnahan had an ultrasound. A doctor looked at the picture and said, "Congrats, it's a girl." Kelly and Sean Bresnahan had been planning ever since.

The baby's room at home is packed with pink, from bedding to drawers filled with girl's clothes. Kevin arrived April 1 at 2:20 a.m.

"They pulled the baby out and held him horizontal and I said, 'It's a boy,'" Sean Bresnahan said.

"The doctor asked me, 'What were you having?'" Kelly Bresnahan said. "I said, 'A girl,' and she said, 'This is not an April Fools' joke. It's a boy.'"

Over the past few days, blue gift bags have been arriving at the hospital.

Although she admits to still slipping and saying "she," Kelly Bresnahan said somehow she knew it was a boy.

"Just, you know, he was rough on me, kicking me inside," she said. "I thought, 'This has got to be a boy.'"

The couple said they will always be skeptical of ultrasounds, but they don't care about the outcome.

"All we were hoping for was a good, healthy baby," Sean Bresnahan said.

The couple is using the April Fools' surprise to help out families in need. They noticed that one of the victims of the recent fire in Manchester, N.H., had a small baby, so they donated the girl's clothes to the Red Cross.
