A new, free HIV test is being offered in San Diego County, 10News reported.

The test could determine whether people were infected as recently as one week ago.

Detection usually takes three weeks to six months.

The test is being offered at three different locations throughout the county.

It is part of a joint research effort by the University of California, San Diego's Antiviral Research Center and the county's Health and Human Services Agency.
