SAN DIEGO -- After discovering a crewless sailboat adrift Monday off Pacific Beach Point, San Diego lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for those who may have been aboard, authorities said.
The empty sailboat was discovered around 1:30 p.m. drifting with its sails up in the Pacific Ocean, a couple of miles off Pacific Beach Point, said San Diego lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan.
More than a dozen lifeguards in five rescue boats as well as a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew conducted "a pretty expansive search" for any sailboat occupants in ocean waters and along the shore, Buchanan said.
The sailboat was brought into Pacific Beach for examination by San Diego police but no evidence of foul play had been found, Buchanan said.
"We're not sure how long the the vessel was adrift," Buchanan said "This is the type of thing we see maybe once a year. Generally it's a person overboard scenario."
