Last week the organizations were overwhelmed with donors and had to turn some people away, but they hope that those donors will come back at some point.

"Our shelves of blood could be empty in a month and possibly the next two months because blood lasts only 42 days," Lynn Stedd of the Blood Bank said. "At the same time, donors can give only once every 56 days."

The San Diego Blood Bank shipped 380 pints of blood to the New York Blood Center last Tuesday. Since then, more than 3,000 donors have given blood.
