How To Talk To Your Children About The Attacks

Tips To Help Parents Communicate Tragedy, Crisis

School officials and psychologists are urging teachers and parent to try to shield young children from televised reports of the terrorist attacks.

Parents are, however, encouraged to talk with their children. The National Mental Health Association offers the following tips for parents to help their children handle disaster-related anxiety.
  • Children need comforting and frequent reassurance that they are safe -- give it to them.

  • Be honest and open about the disaster, but keep information age-appropriate.

  • Encourage children to express their feelings through talking, drawing or playing.

  • Try to maintain your daily routines as much as possible.

  • For more information, call the National Mental Health Association at (800) 969-6642.
